You Used Me...
and we are all better off for it. When you go to the bank you need to use the teller to make a transaction, the butcher, the baker, and the cab driver are happy to be used. How many of you have used an agent to buy a house? Did you ever use a Lawyer, Doctor, or some other professional service? Did you feel uncomfortable about it? Do you call a friend for an ear, or a shoulder? We clearly are not talking about the abuse of someone for personal benefit. However, the leveraging of someones skill set for mutual benefit is, and for some unknown reason, often not utilized by people consciously. Everyday we need the help of other people to get us through our day. It is almost an "invisible technology". That phone hanging on your wall or sitting on your desk, is a great example of invisible technology. You never think about it, you simply pick it up and use it. Defining Use: 1. To put into service or apply for a purpose; employ. 2. To avail oneself of; practice: use caution. 3. To conduct oneself toward; treat or handle: 4. To seek or achieve an end by means of; exploit: Notice that it it takes to the end of the definition 4 to reach exploit. If you look at it as a hammer and a nail, then you could exploit with out looking like a sociopath. For the sake of this post... lets presume we all will show a little restraint in our dealings of other people. You are not succeeding in your goal and now you know why.( hmmm, this sounds like a title for another post...) Your success depends on your ability to leverage any particular "thing" and some people to help you. We have all changed our thing plenty of times. Thinking that it was what we had that was not working, "this thing doesn't work, but this one will". No, it wont either, you will need to change how, not what. This "thing" will mean something different to just about anyone reading this, I am not going to define it because it is different for everyone. What is important is how to get results. See if this reads the way it should be done, emphasis on the right word here is important, OK ready... use people. Which word did you emphasize? If it was "people" great you starting to get it. If you didn't, try reading it the other way. If you have a person or people that have an interest in your success, they of course will help you. Some people just because they are big fans of empowering people, others because they have a need, and helping others gets their need met. To those of you reading this that do help people, please be patient with the ones that are going to ask for help, they may not be use to it. Please, in all fairness to those looking for help, there are a few things you will need to have prepared... 1. A goal, it needs to be clearly defined, loose 10 lbs, an extra 10k a month, help 10 children get the food they need. The goal itself it not as important as defining it clearly. A time frame is also a great idea. 2. A commitment, what you are willing to do to achieve your goal. Saying "I'll do anything" is not going to work here. What will you do, exercise 3x a week, work 10 more hours a week, donate $200 a month? 3. A burning desire to succeed. This is arguably the most important. If you have this one, there will be nothing that can stop you, nothing. 4. A mentor, coach, friend, what ever word you need to define the role of the one whose help you are seeking. Now you have a place to start, if your not following along here, start with number one, then move to number two... Let me know if you need help Thanks for reading, and remember, you can "use" me. |
